Where is Betty's Bay?

Betty's Bay is snugly tucked away between Pringle Bay and Kleinmond on the R44, otherwise more well-known as the Whale Coast Route. The route is so named because the road hugs the mountainside all along the ocean and from July through to December Southern Right Whales can be seen frolicking in the waters. Spectacular views accompany travelers along the entire route.

Betty's Bay is a narrow hamlet stretching 13km along the rocky coastline wedged between mountain and ocean. Tourists from almost every corner of the world visit Betty's Bay when on a trip to South Africa to see the rare shore-based colony of African penguins. Holiday-makers, especially from Cape Town since it is only an hour and a half drive, visit the town not just for its dapper birds but also because it is truly the ultimate beach holiday. Quiet throughout the year with astounding natural surroundings, holiday-makers can enjoy beach combing, swimming, surfing, hiking, sand boarding, whale watching, dining out and basking in the serenity.

If you are traveling from Cape Town the easiest route to take would be the N2 out of town towards Somerset-West. Once out of Somerset-West just before the Hottentots-Holland mountain range take a right turn towards Gordon's Bay on Sir Lowry's Pass road. Then take a left onto the R44 up the mountainside. Sterling views accompany you the entire way as the crystal blue ocean unfolds before you while every curve and bend exposes more of the mountain's beauty. Drive approximately 40 minutes along this road and you will arrive in Betty's Bay.

If you are traveling from the Garden Route it will be an approximate 4 hour drive from George (which has an airport). Most of the journey is spent along the N2 driving past towns like Mossel Bay, Riversdale, Heidelberg and Swellendam. Soon after driving past Caledon take the R43 towards Hermanus. Head towards the right on the R44 past Kleinmond until you get to Betty's Bay.

Both of the routes offer great scenery and the opportunity to bask in the tranquil natural setting is what makes Betty's Bay so special. Whether you are coming from near or far Betty's Bay will prove worth the journey.
