Outdoor activities in Caledon

The bustling town of Caledon is most famous for its natural hot springs whose significance date back to the Khoisan, the first people who lived in the area. Notably, the springs produce up to a million litres of hot, iron and mineral rich water every day at a temperature of approximately 50ºC. 

After a morning of outdoor adventure – from horse riding, birding, hiking, go-karting and mountain biking - visitors can relax and soak up the warm spring water at the Caledon Spa and complement their bathing with one of the many health and beauty treatments on offer. 

The Caledon Hotel is affiliated with an adventure company, where thrill seekers can enquire about zip line tours across the treetops of Caledon. Towering above the ground, the zip line slides range from 8 to 15 meters high, secured professionally to the tree trunks. Horse riding and quad biking is also on offer through the hotel.

Young and old can get their adrenaline pumping in a fun off road Go-Kart race. You can also choose to sit out but still be there with your family and enjoy the magnificent views and a picnic on a grassy bank near the track. 

Another one of the town’s outdoor assets is the wildflower trail; a 10km hiking route set within the world-renowned wild flower garden and reserve. Beginning and ending at the garden the 3–4 hour walk traverses the fynbos-rich area where you will find charming pathways and wooden bridges, lawns, picnic spots, indigenous trees, shrubs and an abundance of birdlife. The trail itself is steep, but offers breathtaking views of the natural beauty of the region. A Wildflower show also takes place every September. The flora and fauna is a memorable showcase of South Africa’s beautiful indigenous floral kingdom. 

For fly fishermen there is a farm just 5 km outside of Caledon that offers fishing as well as many other outdoor activities such as a 4 x 4 trail, mountain biking, abseiling at the waterfall, water skiing or simply picnicking alongside the beautiful dam.
